Credit card holders are being warned about a new scam whereby fraudsters have already got their credit card number and call to ask for the three digit security code.
In a typical scam, a fraudster phones the card holder, and states he is from the Security and Fraud Department of Visa or MasterCard.
The caller quotes his ‘badge number’ to make himself seem more authentic. The caller says that the victim’s card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern and asks if the victim has purchased an anti-telemarketing device for a cost of just under £500. When the victim says they haven’t purchased this product, the caller says they will be issued with a credit to their account.
Don’t give out personal details
The caller goes on to say that he needs to confirm the victim is in possession of the card in order to proceed, and asks for the three digit security code on the back of the card. This number enables the fraudster to make purchases using the victim’s card.
If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone and call your credit card company on a legitimate phone number to advise them that you think your credit card details have been compromised.
