A local Trading Standards office is warning residents about a recent spate of scam mail letters that claim they have won a substantial amount of money in a foreign lottery.
These latest scam mail letters ask for a fee, typically of £20, to be sent to cover administration costs or taxes before the prize can be claimed.
The letters also ask for bank details and copies of household bills or passports. In some instances the letters ask the recipients to keep their win a secret.
Protect yourself from lottery scams
Remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you have not entered a lottery or prize draw then you cannot win. Never pay an upfront fee in response to an unexpected letter or email and be wary about sharing personal information – this can be used to commit identity fraud.
