The email, which uses the City of London Police logo, claims to offer a ‘compensation fund’ from the Fraud Intelligence Unit and National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, offering financial compensation to victims of fraud. It states that HSBC and the South African Reserve Bank have been chosen to handle the compensation claims.
All of these claims are false; this is a form of fraud recovery fraud, targeting people who had formerly been a victim of fraud with promises of compensating for the money they’ve lost. They take advantage of the victim’s trust and hope of seeing their money returned to get confidential details to defraud them for a second time, or request fees in advance to release the recovered money.
