Fraudsters are sending scam emails claiming residents are eligible to a refund on their council tax.
The emails that are being sent from refund@direct.gov.uk offer a refund on your council tax and claim to be from local government.
They ask for confidential bank and credit card details and passwords in order to process the refund. Councils will never ask for personal information in this way.
If you receive one, do not give away any information as this potentially gives fraudsters access to your money - delete it and report it to us.
One council in Cheshire said that if refunds are due, or there is any change in your bill, then statements will be sent through the post. If you are unsure you should call them up directly.
